CHRIST THE SAVIOR CATHEDRAL
The giant Cathedral of Christ the Savior is the largest cathedral in Russia and its an exact replica of the original Cathedral that was pulled down in 1933 on the orders of Stalin. On the Christmas Day of December 25th 1812 Emperor Alexander I issued a decree to build a new church to commemorate the victory over Napoleon and to thank God for his guiding hand. However, for various reasons the construction works did not begin until 1839 when Emperor Nicholas I, younger brother of Alexander I, approved a new design of the church by the Russian architect Ton. The construction works lasted for over 40 years and the new Cathedral was inaugurated in 1881. The original design of Ton followed the classical 5-domed design of the Russian orthodox church. Cathedral was lavishly decorated with ornate bas-reliefs and beautiful mosaics. The reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior became a symbol of Russia’s religious revival. The works began in early 1990s and the new Cathedral was officially reopened for the millennium and was consecrated by the Russian Patriarch.

The idea of creating a series of museums in Russia dedicated to the works of the great jeweler Carl Fabergé first came to the Link of Times in 2004. In that year, Viktor Vekselberg purchased a one-of-a-kind collection of Fabergé works which had been collected by Malcolm Forbes. Since then, the foundation has been collecting Russian works of decorative and fine art and has amassed more than 4,000 items today. In terms of its size, diversity, and the quality of its pieces, many of which belonged to the royal family and other members of the royal courts of Europe, the collection is without a doubt one of the best in the world.

TSARSKOE SELO (KINGS VILLAGE), PUSHKIN, CATHERINE’S PALACE

5 hours tour duration
TSARSKOE SELO (KINGS VILLAGE), PUSHKIN, CATHERINE’S PALACE
If any proof is needed for the extravagance of Russia’s Imperial rulers, then it can be found in the fact that, in less than two centuries, the Romanov Tsars established this suburban estate named Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar village) – that, in terms of grandeur and excess, outstrip even famous French Palaces and gorgeous Italian Villas. The resultant palace, completed in 1756, is nearly 1km in circumference, with elaborately decorated blue-and-white facades featuring gilded atlantes, caryatids and pilasters. It took over 100kg of gold to decorate the palace exteriors. The interiors of the Catherine Palace are no less spectacular. The so-called Golden Enfilade of staterooms, designed by Rastrelli, is particularly renowned and forms the focus of the palace tour. The Amber Room in the Palace was a complete chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors. Due to its singular beauty, it was sometimes dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. Min. pax 2.

As of today the Peterhof is decorated by the biggest system of water cascades, fountains and sculptural elements in the world. Min. pax 2.

ISAAC’S CATHEDRAL AND OTHER CATHEDRALS
St. Isaac Cathedral was originally the city’s main church and the largest cathedral in Russia. It was built between 1818 and 1858, by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand, to be one of the most impressive landmarks of Russian Imperial capital. One hundred and eighty years later the guilded dome of St. Isaac’s still dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg. Although the cathedral is considerably smaller than the newly rebuilt Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, it boasts much more impressive fades and interiors.
